Excessive Sweating and Kids

Growing up is tough enough on its own, having excessive sweating while young is just added misery to an increasingly difficult situation. The onset of hyperhidrosis usually occurs in the very early teens, often times puberty and excessive sweating go hand and in sweaty hand, pun intended.

These infants may get tired while feeding, and have a fast respiratory rate, a frequent cough, and a generally poor weight gain. The condition of having an overactive thyroid, or hyperthyroidism, can also lead to excessive sweating. Excessive sweating with hyperthyroidism makes sense considering the other symptoms: Major clinical weight loss (often accompanied by a ravenous appetite), intolerance to heat, fatigue, weakness, hyperactivity, irritability, apathy, depression, polyuria, and once again, excessive sweating. Additionally, young patients may present with a variety of symptoms such as palpitations and arrhythmias (notably atrial fibrillation), shortness of breath (dyspnea), loss of libido, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. However for elderly, these classical symptoms may not be present and they may be present only with fatigue and weight loss leading to apathetic hyperthyroidism.

    It’s sad to hear of kids developing excessive sweating. Children in the teen years are very mean even without something like excessive sweating to make fun of. Glad people are working on treatments.

    A holistic approach is a good idea for excessive sweating. It really should be the first option.
